Building A Business To Love

If you want to know the answer you can read on……

Paula Gardner asked us if we could do a survey of all of our clients and contacts to find out

"What Is Your Biggest Challenge Around Money?" and do you know what the overwhelming response was?

"I’m not earning enough to save"

Over double the number of people ticked this box than any other!!

Because we gave the people who responded, a box for comments, many of them went on to tell us why.

We were very surprised that the main complaint was not that people felt underpaid in their jobs, but that many were business owners, self employed or thinking of becoming so.

The responses divided largely into three main issues, which was most interesting…

1.  The general assumption that being self employed / starting a business often means not enough income

2.  Not knowing how to "do" business successfully

3.  Not knowing how to find enough customers or clients (and then being able to sell to them at the right price, when you did find them)

Now the good news is that you can design your business to generate many more times income than you need to earn - to run without you and to be worth a decent sum of money so that one day, when you want to go and lie on a beach somewhere, someone else will want to buy it (and in fact that’s what many successful businesses do from Day One).

The other good news is that you CAN learn to "do" business successfully - quite quickly too!  And my business partner Judith Morgan and I are working on something to address just those two burning issues.

But I’m not here to talk about that today………..

I want to talk about Issue #3.  But before I do, I wanted to show you a selection of the responses;  perhaps you may even recognise yourself, if you are self employed or a small or medium sized business owner?

Here is a selection of the responses to the "biggest challenge" question:

"I own my own company so another major worry is saving for my retirement (as well as meeting the bills each month!)

"Developing my business to make sure there is enough to pay me for working in it"

"Having just started a new business - the biggest money concern I have is how to keep the income incoming - you wonder how you’ll ever make enough to save any for when you’re old!"

"I am developing my own business, still working part-time, and have zilch capital……need to massively increase turnover!"

"It’s ‘Not Earning Enough’ ……. (never mind ‘to save’). Since being at home have tried at least 12 business ventures, none of them particularly lucrative…but I keep on trying"

"Making our new company (2004) earn enough money for the 2 of us"

"My main worry is generating a sustained income from my business"

"finding products…..driving enough qualified prospects to buy (from my website), is my current challenge. Like many before me, I seek the Internet elusive ‘holy trinity’ - product - traffic - sales!"

"Starting up business and paying the mortgage combined pressures!"

"Justifying fees to clients (I am a one-person limited company)"

So, what’s the recurring theme here?

Not enough income.

So why is that happening?

Not enough profits (as a business owner, you have to take your income from profits after you pay the costs of doing business)

So why is that happening?

Not enough clients or customers!

So why is that happening?

Assuming that the product or service is in demand and that you are good at what you do………the only reason must be that you persist in keeping yourself a very tightly kept and closely guarded secret!

That’ll be caused by no marketing then!
(or even worse, ineffective and expensive marketing).

Let me ask you a question!

If all your business problems would be solved by higher profit, caused by more customers or clients, causing a bigger turnover (but not bigger costs) and a bigger turnover is created by effective marketing, why is it that so many business owners and self employed people don’t invest in learning how to be more effective marketeers, or invest in working with someone who is?

If you want the answer to the questions about why people don’t learn about relationship marketing , or invest in working with someone who does…….Let me!

If I looked back to the days before I got into marketing, I would have answered "because everyone knows that 50% of advertising is wasted but no-one knows which half!"

Now, advertising is not what we are talking about here and we are not just talking about marketing.  We are talking about "Relationship Marketing".

The kind that works.

The kind that works particularly well online.  The kind that reaches out to people you don’t know, the kind that you would never normally get to know and the kind that you don’t even know that you could know, now!

(Phew!)

In short, the 35 million potential customers or clients who are currently using broadband in the world.

Let me tell you a little story to show you what I mean.

There was once a very skilled hypnotherapist who specialised in helping people increase their confidence so that they could find love.  This skilled hypnotherapist had everything going for her;  she looked kind and friendly,
her voice was very soothing, she had an amazing personal story that explained passionately why she does what she does - her mission in life, if you like.  She was very affordable.

But nobody knew what she did, how good she was at it and how she could help them.  She did ok, but felt she wanted to help more people and at the same time, enhance HER quality of life, financially speaking.

So she made an investment, a fairly serious investment, in working with some people that she knew who could do this relationship marketing thing and lo and behold!

Within just a couple of months, she had a brand new website showcasing her story, her services, her products, her kind face and her soothing voice.  She had an online diary - called a blog - so that people could get to know, like and trust her, and where she was coming from and what she was like.

There was an automated system whereby people could find out what their choices were - only three, so as not to confuse - and what their investment in themselves would be.  When they decided they were ready, they could simply book themselves into her diary, at times she had already chosen as convenient to her, and away they went!

En route to greater confidence and the man or woman of their dreams!

And guess what?

Within one month of that website/blog/diary combo happening, nearly 1000 new people had visited her new home online and entered her world.  163 of them within a 50 mile radius of where she had her real world hypnotherapy practice!  163 new people who knew what she did and where they could find her.

And she had visitors who liked the look of her, what she had to say and what she did, even thought they didn’t want to become customers right now, they decided to join her mailing list - giving her permission to go back to them again and again with news, new offers and recommended products and services.

Down the line a bit, she could even test emails and webpages to see which headings, descriptions and advertisements her visitors preferred!

Better than that, because this hypnotherapist could see what words people were using to search for her, and she could find out what else they were looking for, another couple of ideas sprang into mind on how to create two further sources of income!

Do you think that, if you could get in front of 1000 new potential customers or clients a month - without moving from your armchair - you could increase your turnover, increase your profits, and thereby increase your income?

Would you like to know what it would take? Well, it’s not complicated but it does seem to be beyond most web designers…..!

1. A small but perfectly formed and search engine friendly website
2. An weblog (or "blog") and/or an ezine
3. A shopping cart with inbuilt mailing list, affiliate scheme
and adtracking/adtesting facilities
4. A market research facility to ask her visitors questions
5. A payment gateway to take payment online
6. A Google Adword Campaign
7. A Google Adsense Campaign
8. Other complementary products or services to offer

Now, of course you COULD learn how to do all this yourself (I did!)
but it would take days, months, years out of your life and cost you lots of money in expensive mistakes (and make them, I did too!)

Or you could decide that you really want your business to be attracting 1000+ new potential clients or customers to you EVERY MONTH from the New Year - but you don’t want to do it all yourself!  You could decide to ask Automated Marketing Machine to do it for you.

If we made a start now, we could be ready to change your business life forever by January!  And by attracting more clients or customers, you would increase your turnover, which would increase your profits, which would increase your income and what would that do?

I’ll tell you what that would do.

It would enable you to be able to feel happy and secure, knowing that
not only will you have a nicer life now, but that you will have plenty left
over to save (or even better, invest) for your future.
