So who do we rate this week?
Brenda……..omigod, she has the voice of a soul angel. I love a full on soul voice with a "bottom" in it, she has a real deep, gospel, soul voice and she is rising to the challenge personally too.
The challenge of being that superb as a singer who sings other people’s songs is that you become ghetto’ised as a backing / session singer - like Jocelyn Brown, India and many others. However, people do break out, Diana Ross and Luthor Van Dross, for example. But for each one of those who do break out, there are people like Micheal Watford - awesome singer but the record label never got behind him - and his first and only album (which was superb - died due to lack of backing from a marketing point of view. And there are people like Omar who are stunning but never really get past the first album.
Then there are amazing people like Lyndon David Hall who get dealt a really grim hand by life. Omigod the man is an X Factor if ever I saw or heard one. Beautiful, british, soulful and a great songwriter. But just after his first or second album he got cancer. Cheesus, I hated hearing that news. He’s still fighting it and I wish him so many good wishes. His accoustic soul version of "Do Angels Cry" is on my list of songs to play at my funeral - I just love it so much.
