Three Big Ones

by Nicola Cairncross

I’ve been feeling pretty pensive
this week, having completed Rich
Schefren’s “Three Big Questions”
recently:

“what worked in
2006?”
“what didn’t work in 2006?”

“what held you back in 2006?”

You
fill them in in terms of the answers and
then “takeaway” from the answers.

What worked for me in 2006 was most
definitely…

The secret of financial freedom?

Margaret says:

dumbbell The secret of financial freedom? In January, filled with the enthusiasm a New Year brings I bought a copy of a book called "Smart Girls do Dumbbells" which is about a great way to get fit using small handweights (no, not the power-lifting variety!).

Since then I’ve used my trusty 2kg handweights – just the once. And it made me realise that New Year’s resolutions – and getting fit – have a lot in common with creating financial freedom.

There is no secret to creating wealth (nor to getting fit!). No matter how much we would like to believe that buying this amazing software package for $247 or that exclusive secret ebook for $97 will make us financially free – it’s highly unlikely to happen.

Is that because the ebook tells lies or the software doesn’t work??? Maybe yes, probably no – but the biggest reason it won’t work for most of us is…

What are you worth?

Margaret says:

worth What are you worth? When working with coaching clients, at some stage during the process we usually reach the discussion about "What am I worth?".

Whether it’s a client looking for a new job and wondering what salary to accept or a businesswoman wanting to know what to charge for her time or services.

Now there are many spiritual ways of answering this question and Annie wrote a great entry on beliefs around money just a few days ago, but I’m thinking of the really practical, pounds, euro or dollars answer that most people need to address at some time.

There are many different ways of calculating what your time or product is worth…

Intention v Attention

Nicola says:

whattodo Intention v AttentionOne day, early in my coaching career, I panicked about not having enough clients. I scheduled a call to my first ever coach, Rachel Turner of Kaizen Coaching, to discuss emergency measures I could take. However, before the call, I heard Rachel’s voice in my head (sign of a good coach, note!) asking me, "well, Nicola, just what HAVE you done to attract clients?"

And I thought to myself, well, we discussed this, this and that, and I COULD have done this, this and that. But at the end of the day, what HAVE I actually done? Not much at all, was the truthful answer.

It is almost as though we don’t take action because we have already convinced ourselves that it won’t work.

And this moment of insight was all it required for me to think "well, I don’t want to tell her these things don’t work, because I haven’t actually tried any of them". Is it an inbuilt cynicism, a bit like the cynicism that stopped me ever reading personal development or wealth creation books in the past?

So the coaching call was a bit redundant in the end, because it was all about me reporting in to Rachel on the actions taken since the day before (some of which were already working!) rather than me moaning on to my coach about all the things I hadn’t done, which weren’t working.

Interesting huh? Whenever I speak to my clients and they are complaining that they haven’t got enough clients, I always ask them…

Who Else Is Afraid Of Having Too Much Money?

by Annie Kaszina

shopping Who Else Is Afraid Of Having Too Much Money?Ok, so that is a typical Internet Marketer’s headline. And maybe it made you do a ‘double take’ for a moment. That was the intention behind it.

Some people will read that and their response will be: “Have too much money? Me? I don’t think so. Not so long as there is

    * property      to buy and
    * investments      to make and
    * holidays      to enjoy and
    * performance      cars to drive and
    * children      to mop up the excess and
    * friends      and family to treat and
    * more      that I can tithe and
    * Jimmy      Choo and Prada and Chanel”

All of this, of course, in whatever order floats your boat. (And, while we are on the subject, let’s not forget boats – yachts, maybe – and light aircraft. Or a football team.)

But perhaps as you read down the list you started to feel uncomfortable. It could be that…

Freehold or Leasehold – what’s best?

Susannah Jones says:

key holder Freehold or Leasehold whats best?“I recently asked a question (which Nicola answered in her ezine) on the subject of how you pay off the mortgage on a buy to let portfolio. Her answer – that you dont! – blew my mind and I loved it. But it then got me thinking about my investment strategy. Most of the properties I am looking at are leasehold, but I wonder whether it makes sense to try and buy freehold properties instead, given that the leases will eventually expire and need to be renewed at great cost, wiping out the benefits of any profit made. Is that correct, or is there something I am missing?”

Nicola Cairncross says:

Dear Susannah

You ONLY really want to buy leasehold flats.  As one of the co-owners of the lease (which is what you are as a leaseholder) you have quite clearly defined legal rights in return for what is a very small yearly payment.

If you were a freeholder (as you are with a house) you would have no recourse to the law to sort out those noisy neighbours, people who muck up the hallways, refurb their motorbikes outside their front doors, leave rubbish around, have late night parties, allow their children to be badly behaved and intimidating, for example.

With a lease all the leaseholders can band together and force the miscreant to pull their socks up and behave.  With a freehold you would have no such protection.

Many people worry about…

We Want To Tell You A Story

Once upon a time there was a little poor girl who wanted to
be a princess.  She just knew she was cut out for a life more
fun and luxurious than the life she was living – she could just
tell there were peas under her mattress!

As the years went by, she waited and waited for things to
get better but as time passed, she was forced to discard the
idea that her real mum and dad (the King & Queen) were
coming to get her, and then, as even more years went by,
she had to discard the idea that her handsome prince was
going to find her in her garret and whisk her off to wealth
and freedom.

By this time, she had met and married a lovely – but somewhat
poor – man and had two little royalty wannabes of her own.

At some point, she started to realise that "if it was to be,
it’s up to me!" and started on a journey of self discovery
about ….

It’s All In The Mind….

Nicola says:

stress ball Its All In The Mind....Over at one of my favourite blogs "Get Rich Slowly" they are sharing "the story of a woman who wondered, “I make $6.50 an hour — am I poor?” The author had lost a good-paying job, moved to rural Montana, and was struggling to get by. Several readers forwarded a similar story about a woman who is surviving (and thriving) on $12,000 a year.

The authors of both articles live on about the same income. What is remarkable to me is the difference in the women’s attitudes. Karen, who makes $6.50 an hour, complains about work conditions (she feels like a “slave”), seems unwilling to make sacrifices, and glosses over the fact that she owns a home. Donna, who makes $12,000 a year, has…

Emily At The Yes! Group

Nicola says:

We had a great time with the Money Gym table at the Yes! Group last Wednesday.  It was at the bigger venue they use when it’s a big US type speaker – Bob Proctor this week.

Emily’s blogged about it over here and here’s some of what she had to say…

"Had the most fabulous time the other night at The Yes Group, but it wasn’t the happy, dancing yellow people who made it such a great night for me as I went for two reasons one to help out on The Money Gym stand and two to see Bob Proctor! Ever since the scene in The Secret where Bob Proctor kisses ………

Sigh, Even Internet Geeks Have Their Off Weeks!

Nicola says:

You know how keen I am on internet marketing – I don’t just market our businesses on line, but I mentor and teach people how to do that too. Just one of our clients is regularly breaking through the £1k a week mark at the moment.

However, one of the things you need to know is that it’s not all plain sailing.

Somehow techology gains a personality and it can test even the most hardened internet guru. Do you ever have days when you think your computer knows you are stressed?

This has been just such a week.

One of my online businesses http://www.ArtistManager.com got "turned off" last week by the server host, as I was reported for "spa*m*ing" my mailing list. Now this list is not only double-opt in, but they have to fill in an extensive registration form, so why anyone who had done all that would report me for the dreaded "s-word" I have no idea. Getting it back on involved sending a FAX to the USA. A fax, I ask you.

Then I sent out a recommendation for my mate Marcus, for his excellent 2 day stockmarket workshop, and I got the link wrong. I left off the dot com for heavens sake!

So I had to resend the email – a cardinal sin nowadays.

Then I sent the weekly ezine to the music biz site, and we had a "bounceback" issue; many of the music biz types change their emails all the time, and I had 11,000 bouncebacks from a list of 46,000, and all those bouncebacks came into my Outlook, totally blocking my own emails and overloading my server!! So anyone trying to email me couldn’t get through.

Then I sent the first email for Andy’s new book, and I included the music biz list, after carefully rewriting it all along the lines of "only read on if you want to find out another way to finance your music biz career". Another 11,000 bouncebacks which completely crashed the server! And a complete ban from my server from sending out any more ezines till further notice.

I finally managed to clear my inbox (with Steve’s ever patient, if a little terse by this stage, help) and sent the second email to announce the special page was live.

Over 80 people just went for it in the first 2 minutes (those big picture types who don’t read every word) but I got about 20 emails from people telling me that my email had said the offer for my list would close last Friday.

Sigh.

I’ve gone back to Andy, tolk him what a klutz I am and begged him to help me. And being the mate he is, he has.

I’m off to watch Americal Idol now (aspiring wannabes there are much nuttier than the Brits so very good viewing) and I am closing my ‘puter down now!

Night night!
