Nicola’s Week: Diary Of A Wealth Coach

Well, I’m off to hear Heather, my jazz and opera singing sister, sing Bach in Pisa Cathedral, Italy, next week with my brother Alex and sister Sarah.  We are staying the night in Pisa and going out with the orchestra afterwards for dinner, then getting on a train to Florence and wending our way through the Tuscan countryside, where we are variously staying in a boutique hotel and a boutique b&b in the same building right in the heart of the city.

It’s my first time in Italy and it’s a bonding trip, as amazingly, as kids, our parents never took us on holiday, always too busy buying, doing up and selling houses, trying to get out of the poverty trap.  We also grew up in Worthing, with the beach nearby, so perhaps my parents felt that was good enough!

My dad had also been in the Merchant Navy so he had seen the world, and as you will know if you read last weeks ezine, my first father had taken my mother away, after her first breakdown, so she has travelled the world extensively too.

I’ve been to New York (once), Miami Beach (five times), Sarasota (once), Nassau (once), Greece (about 12 times but just the Mani Peninsula) and I’ve lived in Spain.

A bit pathetic, really, and considering the “4 Hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferris, I have decided that, when the kids leave home, I will spend my life ….

Debt – It’s Not All Bad!

by Nicola Cairncross on September 13, 2007
in Money Gym | Success

There has been a lot on the TV news this week about debt;  record numbers of people are getting overwhelmed with their debt it seems, and there have been a number of interviews with people who have struggling with debt, and those who, more inspiringly, have overcome debt.

GMTV’s website reports that "More than eight million Britons are in serious debt, a quarter of whom regularly struggle to meet their monthly repayments, research showed today.

Around 18% of adults have amassed more than £10,000 in unsecured debt, such as on credit cards, store cards and loans, according to debt consultancy Thomas Charles.

The figure was up from the 14% of people who owed more than £10,000 in April and the 13% of people who had amassed debts of this level 12 months ago.

The research found that….

  • One in 10 Britons now owes between £10,000 and £20,000
  • 3% owe between £20,000 and £30,000
  • 5% of people have amasse debts of more than £30,000.
  • Among those who owe at least five figures, 25% admitted that they frequently struggled to be able to meet their monthly repayments.
  • Men tend to owe more than women, with 13% of men owing more than £15,000, compared with 11% of women.
  • But despite this, women are more likely to struggle with repayments at 27% compared with 24% of men."

I’m no stranger to debt myself, sometimes almost catastrophic amounts of it, as any reader of my ezine knows.  I came out of my marriage with over £48k worth of debt in my name, and then the sale of the hotel left me with some more.

However, the topic of debt is not all doom and gloom………

GMTV offer lots of advice about debt on their website – but be aware that the debt part of that website is part hosted on the USwitch website, a debt consolidation company.  So take the info and ignore the ads!

I’m absolutely the last person to be judgemental or shocked when I hear about …..

Nicola’s Week: Diary Of A Wealth Coach

Mum I was inspired to write the article on success in today’s ezine, and share with you one of the reasons I’m so driven to succeed today, after idly clicking through on a link on Lea Woodward’s site to a site called Unitus – http://www.unitus.com  . While looking for a link to donate to a brilliantly worthy cause, I found a link to donate AND create a "tribute page" to an inspiring woman.

I know loads of inspiring women, in no particular order; my partner

Judith Morgan

, Sarah Cairncross, Kim Black, Heather Cairncross, Phoebe Soremekun who is shaping up brilliantly. However, interestingly as I haven’t seen her for years, the first person to pop into my head was my mother and 30 minutes later…..well, you can read it on our website at www.TheMoneyGymClub.com. I have to edit it to 2500 characters now for the Unitus site but hey!

And in October we are getting together 60 inspiring women; my partners, our coaches, our clients, current, past and future….what a day that will be – still a few places left and you can find out more at http://www.TheMoneyGym.com/workshop .

Still on the topic of what makes people want to be a success, I often say that the "swivel factor" is huge for me.

I love the fact that I write for a living, and have a book on Amazon, and that is all the sweeter because I actually had to pay to enter my English Language and English Literature O’level, because my English teacher did not believe I would pass and he ……

Are You Offering Fish, Poles, Boxes or Buttons?

Nicola says:  Mike Filsaime is one of my Top 10 internet marketers – Steve and I saw him speak at the World Internet Summit 2007 and he shared some amazing thoughts and tools – mainly around focus for me!  He’s just posted a great article on his blog about examining the products or services you offer and as I’m on a strategic thinking bender at the moment….here’s an extract and you can click to read the full article in about 8 minutes – well worth your time in my opinion!

Mike says:  "Fish, Poles, Boxes and Buttons……WTC = What’s the connection?  I am going to tell you a SAD but TRUE lesson.

A lesson, that if you follow, will allow you to increase your income in ways you never would have believed possible.

Please note, I am NOT selling you anything. There is no link to go buy anything. Not now, or later. And this is not a set up to buy anything in the future.

I am simply sharing what I have learned and what has allowed me to make millions of dollars online. (If you have no idea of that, that is OK, you may have been invited to this article. You can go to theHistoryOfMikeFilsaime.com to see how I built my business or you can do a Google search on “Mike Filsaime”.)

O.K. So let me explain to you my Million Dollar Secret.

Real quick… First what I want to make make clear, is that I am talking to anyone in the service related business.

And what I mean by that is, you are selling (or promoting as an affiliate) a product or service that will help solve someone’s problem, cure their pain, answer their question, or give them the pleasure that they are seeking.

(I am not relating to people that are doing some type of arbitrage by getting traffic and making money by clicks made off their sites while sending the customer somewhere else.)

So why the title: “Fish,   Poles,   Boxes,   and   Buttons… WTC?”What is the connection between Fish, Poles, Boxes, and Buttons?

Well, I am sure you have heard the biblical story that teaches the lesson of:

“Give a man a fish, feed him for a day… If you teach him to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.”

Now, while that is noble, and true. The fact (the very very SAD fact) is that MOST people do not want to learn how to fish. Most people do not want to LEARN how to do anything.

So what does that mean? Does that mean that people really just want the fish?

YES!

But they do not just want the fish, but they want it cooked, served right out of the oven, with a great white wine, butter and lemon on to baste it, and some nice rice and vegetables on the side.

And… They want it in a nice environment, and they want pay someone to do it right for them!

That… my dear friend, is the million dollar secret. But I can not just leave it there. Please allow me to explain more of what I mean.

Progression…

Fish: Teach “How to” Catch Fish – 10% of market, high refund rate.
Pole: Sell The Pole – 20% of market, medium refund rate
Box: Give Him The Fish – 30% of market, Low Refund Rate
Button: Prepare the Fish Dinner – 50% of market, Pays a Premium, keeps coming back, and virtually no refund rate.

So we spoke about Fish and Pole…What do I mean by “BOX”?

10 Big Lessons From Little Kids

Nicola says: Phoebeandcashmachine_2My daughter Phoebe with her best most favourite 12th birthday present – an automated money counter! No shame or embarassment felt here in enjoying counting her money!  The lesson I learn from her every day is that to know what you want, she feels totally and utterly deserving and to be relentless in pursuit of those wants (and the value of negotiating hard and relentlessly)

“You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.”

- Franklin P. Jones

Have you ever watched a child completely engrossed in a project? They have the unusual ability to be serious about what they’re doing without taking it too seriously. You can do the same with your life. You can live every day with more focus, and every week with more motivation.

Here’s what every child knows that you may have forgotten. See if you can apply some of these lessons to your adult life.

1. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Even when there’s not a prize in the bottom of the box.

Studies show that children who eat breakfast do better in school. It doesn’t take much further thought to know that adults will feel better and perform better at work as well. Researchers believe that eating first thing in the morning may help to stabilize blood sugar levels, which regulate appetite and energy. They suggest people who eat breakfast are less likely to be hungry during the rest of the day and are, therefore, less likely to overeat. So, tomorrow morning, remember that eating a healthy breakfast is the best way to start off your day, and be good to yourself by eating a healthy one.

2. Homework sucks. Bring work home with you and it’ll ruin your night. And your marriage. And your family. And your life.

Don’t bring work home. If you are overloaded and don’t have enough time at work to do what is expected, talk to your supervisor to resolve the problem. Home should be your relaxation zone, not another workplace. Make sure you separate work and leisure time in your head – so that work doesn’t spill over into your fun. Even simple things like changing out of your work clothes and having a shower when you get home, or going to the gym after work can help you shake off the working day.

3. The only way to know how something works is to completely disassemble it. (This is still good advice when tackling a complex problem. Your plasma TV? Not so much).

Hard problem? Break it down! Writing a book seems daunting, so start by doing an essay. If an essay is too much, start by writing a paragraph summary. The important thing is to have something done right away. Once you have something, you can judge it more accurately and understand the problem better. It’s also much easier to improve something that already exists than to work at a blank page. If your paragraph goes well, then maybe it can grow into an essay and then into a book, little by little, a perfectly reasonable piece of writing all the way through.

4. There’s a reason they don’t give credit cards to 8-year-olds. You’re supposed to save up money before you buy a new toy.

Managing your money is an important life skill that few of us were ever taught. But it’s never too late to learn. Taking control of your money means knowing where it’s going. It’s all too easy to let your money fritter away without any real sense of what you’re spending. The key is to …..

What One Little Thing Did You Do?

My O My! How synchroncity at work is a wonderful thing.

I’ve been asked some wonderful questions so many times this week but the big fat daddy of a recurring question is "what one thing……?" and to be honest, I usually like to distill my questions down to 1-3 max as it get folks to focus, so I often use this device myself.

Well, two people I respect a lot have indirectly been in contact this week………..Kirt Christensen (who I met at the World Internet Summit the first time I spoke there and then who was so sweet at the Millionaire Mind event when I was so nervous about speaking in front of 1000+ peeps) sent me a link to a BRILLIANT post by Marlon Sanders (remember his interns’ diary that I bought and raved about?)  well after I mailed him about how much I thought they had done a great job, Marlon was my first "friend" on MySpace!!)  He’s down to earth, straight talking, gives so much value and he’s funny.

(Look, there’s not an affiliate link in sight, I have a Justin Timberlake party to go to on Second Life and a virtual boyfriend back from holiday so it must be bloody good if I’m delaying that to write about it – I’m on a virtual promise here so read this stuff people!!)

Anyway, here’s an extract of Marlon’s post and the link to read more…..genius writing at it’s most authentic!  Check out Kirt’s site too – he’s a good bloke.

By Marlon Sanders

There are 6 basic ways to get dough online:

1. Promote affiliate products

2. Google adsense

3. Sell a service

4. Sell advertising

5. Sell physical products (think ebay)

6. Sell information

You’ll notice that the last 4 all involve selling something. That’s the approach I wanna talk to you about today…

You Don’t Know Me But……You Changed My Life!

SandysHi Nicola, I just wanted to write and thank you for changing my life.

You’ve never met me, but I’m an avid reader of Woman & Home magazine (I’m old before my time but I love it!) and one week I read your story, I think it was in a feature about how to become a millionaire by women who have done it. From there I looked at your website.  Now I apologise, because back then I was the world’s biggest cynic.  I’m changing now though, one day at a time.

After reading your story I then read Rich Dad Poor Dad.  I actually discovered my husband already owned ….
