Staying in the wrong job...

A note from Nicola
|
Dear Friend
I had a quiet, reflective New Year,
with much reading and thinking
between the two holidays. A very
nice meal, courtesy of Steve, some
friends and sisters and Jools
Holland’s Hootenanny – one of my Top
100 things to do before I die is to
attend the (November!!) recording of
that! Anyone out there in my ezine
readership that could help with that
for 2007?
Since finding out that social
network site MySpace.com has got
over 100 million users already (I’m
not sure my calculator goes that
high on the zeros) I’ve gone Web 2.0
mad! Imagine if you could reach 1%
of them – that’s 1,000,000 I think,
but I can’t be sure, because of the
calculator anomoly. Trying to work
it out manually……. even if you only
reach 0.01% of them, that’s 100,000
people.
Web 2.0 is where you hang out and
create profiles (and live links back
to your site), add content and
interact on social network sites –
you may recall that I’m getting
heavily into Ecademy now (100,000
business users, mainly in the UK).
I’m using it via Blogging and
Marketplace for online lead
generation, Ecademy Blackstar for
focused offline networking.
Results or wasted effort and time?
Ecademy is rising up my web stats
fast as a top referring site and I
created a profile on 43Things.com
today and within an hour I was
noticing traffic coming in – that’s
amazing!! I also contributed to the
Warrior Forum last night and by
today, I was seeing traffic from
that too. How do I know? Because my
LivePerson account tells me where
they are coming from….and what
search terms they used to find us…
Basically the theory is, the more
inbound links to your website, the
higher you get ranked (and the
sooner you get indexed) by the
search engines. If those links are
from high ranking “important” sites
then your site gets ranked higher in
SE results.
Jason Hulott of
Speedie
Consulting started it off by very generously
directing
The Money Gym Club Silver
email group to a free report about
Web 2.0
and a list of Social Bookmarking
Sites at
www.web2revealed.com/bookmarkingsites/
and that’s distracted me horribly
today. As one of my goals was to up
the ante on free search engine
optimisation (SEO) for The Money
Gym I tell myself it was really
doing marketing (even while I was
having fun).
And I was able to share what I
learned immediately with Julia, one
of my Internet Mentoring clients,
hot off the press. She’s nearly
ready to launch her site and we will
be using these Web 2.0 methods to
get free traffic in the early days.
By the way, Julia has gone from
internet newbie to someone with a
one year coaching programme, three
products and full, e-commerce
enabled website (www.TeachersInDistress.com) within 3 months. Did
it all herself with
The Money Gym recommended
AMM Home
Study System, me mentoring her once
a week and her own bloomin’
determination. Well done Julia!!
The “top” social networking sites –
that I have heard of - (and note the
Google Page Rank numbers in
brackets) are:
del.icio.us - [PR 8] – downloaded
the software for my toolbar but
can’t make head not tail of it
Digg - [PR 7] – heard of but not
playing yet
Flickr - [PR 8] started getting
unsolicited contacts from people on
this – will ignore for now
Youtube - [PR 6] – got videos on
this already
Technorati - [PR 8] – struggling
with this one
Ecademy is not in their Top 10 but
it’s British so that explains that,
but I know it’s got a Google Page
Rank of 7/10 (the Money Gym has a PR
of 4/10 so I’m pleased about that
too)
Neither is LinkedIn.com so I’ll
ignore that one for a while (and all
those people I have never heard of
trying to Link Me In)
www.43things.com – talking of fun,
how much fun is THAT site? Like an
interactive New Year’s Resolution
site but with REALLY amazing
software running it. Check it out.
Much less funky and much less clunky
than MySpace and links to
43people.com and 43places.com – why
43, I have no idea.
I thought it
might be a fun way to renew my 90
day goals, but I got totally
distracted. I’ve now got a list of
social networking sites to get my
head around (and post blog articles
on) including Ecademy, MySpace,
43Things, Ezine Articles, Technorati
(no idea how this works yet), Digg
(or this), Craigslist (gonna check
that one just coz I like the name!)
If you’ve managed to follow any of
this, have fun, I am!
Nicola
PS. If you want us to hold your hand
while you figure it all out, just

Who Da Man? You Da Man!
by Nicola Cairncross
I received an email recently from someone asking me to
recommend a good accountant or financial planner.
They said:
“I
know I am going to make it. I have made a good start at
controlling my financial matters, but the main thing I
need right now, is an absolutely top quality and
trustworthy financial planning & investment
expert/accountant.
I am not looking for cheap. I am looking for the
best…
I want to forge a permanent loyal relationship with
such an expert, paying top fees for top financial
planning. I am just completing my first JV property
deal, from which i will be able to finance the fees at
the beginning."
I replied:
“You are talking about two different people, if not
three!
Firstly, you need an accountant, to help you set your
businesses up as tax efficiently as possible and make
sure that your business vehicles are legal and run
properly to comply with bodies such as the Inland
Revenue.
You can find a good accountant locally by asking lots
and lots of local business people and investors, who
they recommend – not just which firm, but who
specifically at the firm.
I must warn you however, most accountants work
retrospectively, and are not, by their very nature,
pro-active. They hate risk and are not business people
or investors themselves usually. And you still need to
be responsible for finding out what your responsibilities
are - your accountant won't know what you don't know and
will assume that you know everything you need to know.
Then you need someone who is expert at the most basic
and perceived to be “safe” investments, like ISA’s and
also to sort out your insurances in the most tax
efficient way.
Then you might still think that you need an
investment expert – except that I would argue you don’t.
First of all, if you haven’t already, you need to
read “Rich Dads Guide To Investment” which is superb.
Then,
working with a Wealth Coach, you could hammer out a
simple and devastatingly effective investment strategy –
short term, medium term and long term – that would make
sure you are in control of your financial freedom and
future wealth creation.”
However, two weeks on, this email exchange has stayed
with me and played on my mind.
I started thinking about the underlying message
here. Have you figured out what is is?
The underlying message is that ......

"I can't praise Nicola and
The Money Gym enough. It has encouraged me to start a
successful business, guided me into developing my
property portfolio, helped me to build on my shares
portfolio, and really opened my eyes to the idea of
passive income.
I now have 110 websites producing
passive income and another 90 in the pipeline!
Joining
The Money Gym was one of the best
investments I have ever made. Not only did it
introduce me to great information and give me a
fantastic education in the entire field of wealth
building, more importantly it introduced me to some
of the most inspiring and amazing people whom I now
feel privileged to call my friends."

This week we're in Lane #3 : Property
In Venice with Andy Shaw
by Annie Kaszina
Ok,
so first off let me say I am not in Venice with
Andy Shaw himself, just with his book. And what a book
it is. It is almost enough to distract me from the
splendours of Venice. It and Andy's voice have accompanied
me through Venice proper, the Lido and even to Padua.
So what have I learned as I march through Venice deep in
thought, revising my property strategy?
First off, it has brought home to me the power of
property, far more than my own investments ever have. It's
as if, finally, I get it.
I get exactly why I have been doing what I have been
doing and why I really want to do more, all of a sudden. It
has led me to feel that the time has come to pursue my
property strategy far more actively than I have until now.
(Well done, Andy. Not a lot of people could have done that!)
Andy's comment that even if you...

Staying in the Wrong Job
by Jason Kotecki
Look
around you. There's a host of people working
in jobs that are, shall we say, less than
rewarding.
If it were not true, the acronym T.G.I.F.
wouldn't exist.
The reasons most people give are legion:
"I have a family to support"..."We need the
benefits"..."This is all I know"..."It's a
tough job market, I'm better off staying
where I am"..."I've only got a few more
years to retirement"..."We couldn't afford a
pay cut"..."I'm too young"..."I'm too
old"..."I don't know the right people"...
and on and on.
I argue that these reasons are really
more of an excuse to stay in one's comfort
zone.
They are usually offered up as if another
job -- one that taps more into our deeper
interests and passions -- could never
support a family, provide benefits, or mean
a salary increase. And, more times
than not, when someone offers up one of
these excuses -- I mean reasons -- everyone
politely smiles and nods in a way that says,
"Yes, this is a very wise and responsible
person."
Wise? Responsible? Really?
I believe the key to a truly happy and
fulfilled life is spending a good chunk of
your time pursuing the things you're
passionate about. The things that fire you
up. The things you're good at. The kinds of
things you'd do whether you got paid or not.
The lie is that it's not really work if
you're having fun.
The truth is that there are more ways to
earn a living doing what you're passionate
about than you've ever considered.
Interestingly, I have found that when
confronted, many people have a difficult
time nailing down their passion. They think
to themselves that if they can just get
through to the next day, the next month, the
next promotion, it'll get better.
If you're trying to figure out what
exactly you should be doing with the rest of
your life, I offer this technique I once
heard years ago:
