Is the internet an effective means of advertising for
therapists?
by Nicola Cairncross
Lorraine Armstrong recently asked this question:
I am a fully qualified Counsellor about to do an NLP training course. Other
qualifications include Practitioner Diploma in Eating Disorders, Brief Therapy,
Solution Focused therapy and I am also a qualified Counselling Supervisor with
existing clients.
I advertised in Yellow pages for the first time last year but
there's not much to show for that.
My Question: Could the internet be effective in advertising and gaining new
clients for me? If yes, do you have any contacts in setting up a website?
I know nothing about such things.
Many thanks
Lorraine
Nicola Cairncross replied:
Dear Lorraine
Internet advertising is the only way forward as far as I'm
concerned. Nothing else works as well when promoting a
specialist and personal service.
For the amount of money you would spend on design,
copywriting, brochures, etc., you could have a simple but
effective website set up, attracting people interested in
your fields of expertise, within 15 minutes of the site
going live, and locally as well as nationally (if you can
work on the phone as well as in person).
However, the website is just the beginning. You need to...

This week we're in Lane #1 : Business
Theory of Constraints
by Nicola Cairncross
I’m just starting to get stuck into Rich Schefren’s Business Growth Programme, and I was sorting out a folder to keep everything in and tidying up the notes from listening to previous videos, when I found a bit of paper on which I had written “Rich’s Theory Of Constraints” at the top.
Stopping to look it over, I realised that I contained some good stuff which I could share with you.
Rich says that you have to start thinking of your Business as a System and that if that is so, what is the constraint to growing that Business/System?
Apart from the size of your mailing list, the other constraint is...

Keep Your Eyes on the Road!
by Money Gym Coach,
Margaret Collins
There are many people who live for thrills. Speaking as someone who can find taking a corner in a 2CV at 30 miles an hour pretty exciting, you can see that, adrenaline junkie, is not a good description of me!
The closest I've ever been to real adrenaline in anything other than the dodgems at a fairground was a "rally driving experience" day. It just didn't seem natural to be screaming around a corner at 65 miles an hour in second gear – and I'm so glad it wasn't my gear box!
The car careered around the gravel-strewn road and the tyres began to lose their grip as a slide started.
That's when the instructor came out with these immortal words...

Dear Friend
Today, some lovely flowers came –
the second bunch this week actually.
Like buses, flowers are, I find, none
for ages then several bunches come at
once!! The first bunch was from
Chichester Uni where I spoke to two
batches of new Marketing students who
apparently gave me some lovely feedback.
And the second bunch were from someone
who I helped with her CV which was
lovely.
NETWORKING -
Ecademy Black Star Day
I made it to the proper Ecademy
Blackstar day this week – thank
goodness. After last week’s shenanigans,
I was well up for it, only to wake up in
the middle of the night before, with a
rather bad pain in my side. I have had
two babies with minimal pain relief so
believe me I know what pain is. This
was, on the “giving birth scale of pain
going from 1-10”, where giving birth is
a 10, this was about a 7.
I lay there for a while, thinking, hmmmm,
am I going to have to get Steve to take
me to casualty, but not wanting to
overreact as I usually do (I’m a rudely
healthy hypochondriac) I got up and got
some Nurofen, and after about an hour it
started to improve - after I felt a
weird shifting sensation up under my rib
cage.
When 6.30am came, I got up and thought
“well if I’m going to casualty I want a
shower first” so took some more Nurofen
and had a shower. All of which made me
feel marginally better so I thought I
would push on to London.
I met someone entertaining on the
station, who distracted me nicely on the
train and then the Blackstar day was
great, as always. I felt a bit wobbly
all day but the Nurofen did the trick. I
had some great one to one’s, as they are
known, and loads of people asked about
Hermione, the virtual wealth coach in
Second Life, which was great fun, as I
had just got the “Official Guide To
Second Life” for Mother’s Day, and I had
it in my bag.
I got home fine and went to the doctor
the next day who diagnosed a gall stone,
not a kidney stone as I had
self-diagnosed. Oh joy. Blood tests and
ultrasounds to follow. And apparently
very high blood pressure – 160/100 -
which is a new development but could be
due to the recent stress levels around
closing down AMM and having to move.
PROPERTY
Oh yes, Money Gym Towers is on the move
again. The landlord (although swearing
that this would be a long term let), has
decided to sell, and even though all the
Shoreham Beach long-timers said it was
over-priced, it sold quite quickly in
spite of the fences falling down around
us and a lot of half finished DIY jobs
left by the owner...
Luckily, this time we immediately found
a lovely suitable house for let, in a
great location, owned by the Estate /
Letting Agent owner themselves, and its
hopefully long term because he has shown
no sign of selling it for years.
He’s built a new house over the road for
his family, and is obviously a “pro”
property investor, just keeping this one
rented out, with the rent going up, so
that he can re-finance at regular
intervals. It’s got to be worth over
half a million now, so with the new
luxury flats developments and the new
Marina being talked about, it won’t take
another 7 years (the UK average) to
double in value. How else could you make
half a million in 4-5 years, with the
tenant paying for your investment?
A canny man, unlike many estate agents,
who for some reason don’t often invest
themselves.
Why are we renting? Whenever I mention
moving in this ezine I get asked that.
The answer is because we want to live in
a very specific – and not at all cheap
area – and we don’t want to tie up the
kind of money in a deposit yet, that it
would involve to buy, with costs, stamp
duty etc. We are investing with Passive
and we will let the portfolio they will
build for us, appreciate, and eventually
buy our own house for us without us
having to dip into our pockets. Lovely!
If you would like to let your portfolio
of rental properties buy your next
house, and find out how that can happen,
you need to attend a Passive Open Day,
just email me at nicola@themoneygym.com
and I will give you the details of the
next one in central London (they are not
open to the general public anymore - you
have to be introduced).
SOCIAL
I went out to our local Chinese emporium
last night with my two sisters. You
would think that we would have nothing
to talk to each other about, as we see
each other regularly. But no, the
conversation flowed freely and we got
our money’s worth from the Christmas
vouchers my Dad had sent from New
Zealand. Great present from afar, Dad!
My little sister, Sarah (the Editor of
this ezine), announced that she is going
to sell her gorgeous 3 bed apartment in
Worthing, West Sussex and move over to
Shoreham Beach as she loves the
lifestyle here too. If you would
like to receive details of her property,
email her at
sarah@themoneygym.com - but be
quick, as I'm sure it won't be on the
market for long!
And tomorrow I’m seeing Chris Barrow, my
second ever business coach, who is
coming south to visit one of his dentist
clients’ new surgeries. Said dentist was
not only a Money Gym client at one time,
but he was my dentist too. Owns a LOT of
rental properties and is highly
successful with a new baby and a
professional and flourishing surgery –
and he’s only young still.
Chris has bypassed Worthing as a
purveyor of hotels, and I don’t blame
him as, since the Acacia closed (grin)
there isn’t much choice. He is staying
at one of the posher ones in Brighton.
I’m looking forward to seeing him and
hearing about the changes he’s making to
his business and I’m sure we can hatch a
plan or two.
Chris is great fun, a great coach and a
great business person and I love his
coaching clients – mainly dentists – he
refers a lot of them to The Money Gym as
they often have some marvellous assets,
but can’t stop drilling teeth because
the money stops – and it’s good money
too. They are our ideal client really.
And Monday, it’s Ricky Gervais in
Brighton. Steve’s birthday present that
I’m hoping to muscle in on…surely he’ll
take me?!!
Have fun, I am!
