How To Tell Easily, Quickly And For Free, If Your Website Is Working

by Nicola Cairncross

The Money Gym website originally grew pretty organically and I was always much more focused on the conversion of unique visitors to ezine signups (which are easy and quick to track) but recently I’ve been looking at unique visitors to sales conversion, as we can sell our ebook direct now and at £25 / $50 it’s about the right price point.

The idea is that we use the sales of the ebook to fund the acquisition of new ezine subscribers (potential future customers), effectively making our online marketing free of charge or even profitable. We know it takes 8-10 months for a certain proportion of our Money Gym members to convert from ezine subscribers to members, so theoretically we can predict future sales from looking at unique visitors numbers / ezine subscribers, say 9 months ago.

About a year ago we looked at our whole business model, adding more products, and so everything went up in the air a bit, and I decided it was a good time to revamp how we did things. I wanted a clearly defined customer journey, both through the website and from “fee to free”.

About the same time, I moved over to using Google Analytics to track my traffic, as the hosting company’s reporting of unique visitor numbers was a bit unreliable – for example, some months it said we had had 4000 unique visitors but I had paid for 4500 Google clicks. The numbers didn’t add up sometimes, so I figured that if I used Google’s own tracking system, I could take issue with them if it looked odd.

It’s lucky that one of the best tracking tools on the market is actually Google Analytics. All the techie lot recommended it even before it became widely available and one of the joys of it, is that it is not only free, it’s incredibly easy to install and it integrates with your Google Adwords campaign, if you have one, or you can just use it on its own. In Google’s own words….

“Google Analytics offers a great breadth of functionality; you can use it to track visitor flow through your site, to view the source of referrals to your site and to see how well visitors make it through a conversion process such as purchasing an item or signing up for a newsletter. In addition, Google Analytics can track non-AdWords advertising campaigns such as banner campaigns or other pay-per-click programmes”

As they say, in addition to telling where your visitors are coming from, it’s also got a nifty tool called “Goal Conversion Reporting” which tells you how many of your visitors take a “most wanted action” and how many you lose at each stage of their journey through your website. I’ve been looking at this for a while but never gone there yet on setting it up; well, this morning I bit the bullet and I can’t believe how easy it was to use, so I wanted to share it with you aspiring internet marketers (and those of you in business with a website).

Step 1 – Set up a Google Account

It is easiest to set up your Google account, you can get one free at https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount - from here you can administer your Google Adwords, your Google Analytics, set up a customised Google seach page, view and administer your GMail if you want an extra email account, and one day, your Google Adsense will be integrated too.

Step 2 – Set up a....

Steve, many thanks for the excellent service (after buying the Money Gym ebook).

In my own business I keep looking for ways to make a positive impression with customers and am always delighted when I interact with others trying to do the same.

I'm disappointed that I am delivering a training event on October 5th and can't even consider attending your "Women Talk Money" Workshop event in London.

Best Wishes, Margaret Adams

Giving Up On Perfectionism

by Judith Morgan

I have been meaning to get some business cards done for my coaching business for AGES. Stu (designer) and I have met, talked and e-mailed each other about them. I want them to be a referral card like Chris Barrow's (www.thebusinesscoachingco.com) with my elevator speech, photo, and nine coaching strategies on them. In short, I want them to be PERFECT!

Ha, ha!

All that has happened is that we haven't produced them. I have been networking away without business cards. More madness, driven by the illusion of perfection.

Then last weekend an opportunity arose and I realised I would definitely need at least 50 cards by 7 a.m. this coming Friday morning so early Monday I e-mailed Stu and said "forget the perfect ones, I just need artwork mailing to Kall Kwik today". I spoke to the bloke at Kall Kwik and agreed to fetch them just before 6 p.m. last night.

Stu had asked me did I think the wording on the back was right. I said I didn't have time to care this week, they weren't perfect (!) but they were good enough, so we went with them, even though I will probably change them later.

The man at Kall Kwik in the Edgware Road (Farouk) said he needed to move things about on the card as Stu had put some of the words too near the edge, I said "fine - move away"! So relaxed am I. Weird.

Then I went to collect them last night. I walked into the shop at 5.20...

A note from Nicola

Dear

Alex CairncrossWe kicked off the week by picking my baby bro Alex up from Heathrow airport at 6am in the morning on Saturday. That was a nasty shock to the system I can tell you!! As was the fact that he’s so buff and health conscious !

He’s been blogging on Facebook about his preparations for this four month “try it and see” period at home, after 15 years in Sydney, and he also posted up some hilarious old photos of us all growing up, which he rescued from my mum when she was going through her “photo burning” stage. If you are a member of www.facebook.com check it out on my profile.

This is my singing sister Heather and I in the late sixties - those are matching dress and cape sets in tweed wool – horrendous and so hot and uncomfortable!!

Nicola and Heather Cairncross

Heather is singing this Wednesday as part of the Arundel Festival, doing Gershwin in the latin style. Looking forward to that as her gig at the Hare & Hounds was PACKED – standing on the tables they were!

If you like jazz, Gershwin, or latin music check out her website at www.Altovoice.com

Patricia Ann LishAnd here’s my glamourous mum – she was also in “The King & I” in the stage performance in the early 60’s. Outfits!!

I’ve been trying to come back up to speed workwise, albeit slowly, this week, using the overcast weather as a prop to think “autumn, autumn”.

Although I’ve still been taking it easy, getting up late, and playing quite a bit (I’m mad about Second Life again, having my real life sister to hang out with in there!) I’ve been reviewing Modules 4 & 5 of Rich Schefren’s programme.

Man! That competitive intelligence module does my head in – we are SO going to have to outsource that. The problem is that nobody really does what we do, they do parts of it, or they do it differently, but is that really true? Do we have a unique selling proposition or am I just deluding myself? There is competition in the UK for what Judith calls the “wealth creation dollar” but I have to really fight overwhelm and detail boredom when looking at that module.

Module 5 is a lot more fun, being about creating more back end products, looking at systems you use that you can license, improving your value proposition, ways of improving customer service and out of these two modules have come some great ideas. And I’ve been looking at the competitive intelligence stuff again this morning and it’s helped me attempt to craft “a marketing offer that is irresistible”. I’ve come up with ……

The Money Gym offers a proven, simple, convenient wealth creation system, for women who want independence, security, luxury and fun. We will show you how YOU can become a millionaire within 10 years if you want to, and what’s more, we will show you how to get a 100% return on your investment within one year or less (or your money back). All you have to do is listen, learn and take action….

Feeback welcome!

SECOND LIFE

Second Life shop and apartments to rent

Hermione has set up the shop (and separate apartment above) with a new rental system that seems to promote vacant units online as well. She did think about actually setting up a designer clothing shop and bought several “business in a box” sets of lovely stuff, but puzzling out how to actually get the items in the vendor was a step too far on the steep learning curve.

She’s gone back to the idea of just renting it out, and is giving away four weeks free on both, so if you are thinking of selling upmarket items and need somewhere to live too, this could be the unit for you.

Here's this week's Second Life video for you SL addicts who want to know how to create your own stuff.. and maybe sell it in your own shop, like the one we've got available to rent  *lol*  IM Hermione Watanabe in-world for details and to strike a deal.
